The HDR-HC3 can record and play back both high definition (HD) and recording in standard definition (SD) video on standard MiniDV cassettes.

Real-Time HD Codec Engine

Sony has developed real-time MPEG Encode / decode systemin shape with low power consumption and compact size to a camera employees. This engine provides efficient MPEG2 compression and recording and playback of clear HD images at the same bit rate of the DV format, so that HD video to be recorded on MiniDV cassettes same as that used for SD recording.
